Organic farming at the Herdade dos Lagos

We are currently changing our entire production into organic farming.

The carob trees have been organically grown right from the beginning; we are now changing as well our vineyards into organic farming. It means we abandon herbicides and instead use agricultural herbicides to use in organic farming only.

Biological farming is still considered to be very exotic in Poretugal. This let to numerous reservations made and we had to break down many administrative barriers. This was the main reason why we laid out the vineyards in a so called controlled farming in the beginning – which is a immediate stage between the traditional and certified organically farming.

But this intermediate standard was definitely not enough for us. And since 2008 we have changed all parts of the Herdade dos Lagos to organic farming. We are currently in the official changeover period which lasts three years. After we have passed all controls and achieved all certificates we will be allowed to affix the seal to our bottles in 2011.

Our aim is to produce pure nature wines and products to be able offer you unadulterated pleasure and to save the natural resources at the same time by using the untouched ground and the optimum conditions in the Alentejo area.
